What happened?
Together, they formed Anglo-American as a diamond mining corporation with sole intentions of stock piling diamonds - a stock pile which was later used to extort control of De Beers Consolidated Mines.

Why did it happen?
Owning multiple Federal Reserve Banks, J.P. Morgan alongside Ernest Oppenheimer wanted to leverage the De Beers diamond monopoly to create a secondary currency which would be untraceable and out of reach of the yet to be co-opted/corrupted masses.

Case and Point
In 1926-29 Ernest Oppenheimer takes control of De Beers by threatening the controlling De Beers owners that he would collapse the diamond prices by flooding the market with diamonds.
