Cops solve ANC activist’s murder case

The 1997 murder near Rustenburg of ANC anti-apartheid activist Sandra Ray Jacobson has been solved, Johannesburg police said on Tuesday.

Superintendent Chris Wilken said the investigation had been re-opened in March and found that Jacobson was killed in a robbery and her killer, Jabulani “Panka” Khoza, was now dead.

Wilken said Jacobson, 40, lived on a smallholding in Mooi Nooi near Rustenburg and sold vegetables to Johannesburg shops.

“On November 4, 1997 her half-naked body was found in the boot of her Toyota Corolla, which was parked in Abel Avenue, Berea, Hillbrow. She had been severely assaulted and strangled to death,” said Wilken.

“Her cellphone and handbag were missing. Cash from deliveries were also missing. There was no conclusive forensic evidence that she had been raped.”

In March this year, Captain Dick Diedericks of the serious and violent crimes unit took over the case.

He found a taxi driver who had ended up with Jacobson’s cellphone, who told him that he got the phone from Khoza.

Khoza had been interviewed in the original investigation and told police that he knew Jacobson and had helped her unpack the vegetables, but police had not been able to link him to the murder.

Diedericks found that Khoza died of natural causes in May 2003 in Boksburg.

The case was handed to the senior public prosecutor for murder cases in Johannesburg, who decided that the evidence indicated that Khoza robbed and killed Jacobson.

“The investigation can be regarded as finalised,” said Wilken. – Sapa
