Hi Jonathan,
I actually just began a dialogue with Bernie Gevisser whose father Issy Gevisser
was one of the founders of Moshal Gevisser which I read owned a company called
ACME Timber that apparently owned "huge forests" in Natal, South Africa.
When I heard that Issy also owned priceless land in Hafia Harbor, Israel I
wondered what Bernie was doing living in South Africa and not in Israel; which
is actually where my parents met up in 1972 while my dad fought in the Yom
Kippur war.
How are you related to Bernie who I understand fought in the second world war?

Yes, Moshal Gevisser was the family firm. My grandfather, Morris Gevisser and
his brother-in-law, Sol Moshal, along with Issy, Morris' brother, were the
founders. Bernie and my dad, Leslie, were first cousins and worked there almost
all their working lives until it was sold under the table to Natie Kirsch who
did the first asset strip in SA, dismantling in a few months what had taken
generations to build..
Both Bernie and my dad fought in WW2. Bernie was a pilot who flew Spitfires.
Wonderful man. I went to school with his kids.
Bernie lives in Melbourne now, near his daughter Kathy.
Where/who/how are you... and what's your interest in all this??

Jonny,
I am actually interested in getting to the bottom of how the US allowed the
Apartheid regime to stay in power for so long.
Even though there were many Jewish people who lead opposition to the Apartheid,
there were a great many Jewish people especially here in the US who were open
supporters of the Apartheid regime beginning with Charles Engelhard Jr.

While doing some research into Engelhard, the name David Gevisser came up
beginning with him being named CEO of Engelhard's South African operations in
1970 but there is no mention in David Gevisser's bio of what he did before that
led to him becoming CEO.
What is your relationship to David Gevisser? Would you know if David Gevisser
was in fact connected to Moshal Gevisser?

He is my uncle and worked at Moshal Gevisser at the start of his career. Yopu
should contact him directly if you want more info. I don't feel comfortable
talking about him 'behind his back', asit were. Suffice to say, however, that he
was an advisor to Kader Asmal when he was Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry
in the first democratic government after 94.

Assuming this is Davids son,
Mark seems to be distancing himself and his father from Moshal Gevisser.
You say it was an under the table deal which is curious because it seems to
have taken place a year or so before Marks father started to become very rich
and then it turns out, based on additional reading that David Gevisser became
the executor of Charles Engelhards estate when he died on March 2nd, 1971.
Apart from you, do you know why the Gevisser family would not want to talk about
this major stripping of assets? Could it be that Engelhard had something to do
with that under the table deal?

lots stories i grew up with re MG's demise, replete with conspiracy theories,
most especially around natie kirsch and sol moshal. i don't recall an engelhard
link though. my dad and Bernie were broken by the collapse of the firm and found
themselves on the street, caps in hand looking for jobs. they never could get to
the bottom of it.
old history, old wounds, that resulted in much suffering in our small branch of
the family, shadowing our childhoods hugely.

seems you know gary well and so your knowledge of the family, especially bernie
and david is probably similar to mine even greater, as gary has made a study of
the chequered history, specifically around the sell-out of MG that badly efected
his and our branch more than most...yet you made out you knew nada..
