Harry Oppenheimer and Charles W. Engelhard Jr. – William D. Cohan

I only met my “lucky uncle” David Gevisser 1926-2009 as an adult when I was 38 back in 1995 but that didnt prevent him from writing me a letter of introduction addressed to Engelhard-Debeers’ San Francisco lawyers which I carried with me when emigrating from South Africa to US on March 16, 1978 but it took a full year of exhaustive interviewing before joining DeBeers at their most important site holder Codiam Inc. who remain headquartered on 47th Street New York.

You would understand that I wasnt naive in 1978 and that D. Gevisser perfectly understood, the same when we concluded our all day meeting in 1995, the day after I spent an entire morning meeting with South Africa’s new Minister of Trade and Industry, Trevor Manual, a meeting D. Gevisser only became aware of when I mentioned it near the start of that one of a kind meeting which was very pleasant and full of laughter from the beginning as he had only good reason to be pleased with how well I had progressed without feeling the need to make a public spectacle of myself, but it did not end on a positive note as I refused his offer to manage his investment portfolio which back then was more valuable than the wealth of the entire Harry Oppenheimer family.

I kid you not.

Nor was D. Gevisser kidding around when a couple of weeks later he called an intimate family dinner where my “rediubtable” [sic]British-English mother Zena who arranged our all day meeting as well the letter of introduction was of course the most important quest and nor did my mother react when D. Gevisser blurted across the table after first sucking down on a couple of rounds of hard liquor, “Your son Gary is naive!”

I hadnt mentioned a word to my mother about any aspects of our all day meeting because she had raised me right from a young age with the axioms “Loose lips sink ships” and “The tallest trees attract the most wind.”

A few weeks prior to my decision to break my 24 year silence with DeBeers-Engelhard on 11.11.2004, I made my mother aware of Epstein’sThe Diamond Invention that is still available free on the Internet, and just pointing out the words in chapter 18, THE AMERICAN CONSPIRACY about Engelhard having “no male heirs”, and after a moments hesitation she warned me “ARE YOU NOT CONCERNED FOR YOUR LIFE!!”

Today I celebrate the 14th anniversary of the Jerusalem Post publishing the first of my four letters to the editor explaining the increase in terrorism which would follow the Presidential Pardon 12 days earlier of DeBeers-Engelhard oil trader Marc Rich.

Of course I celebrate much more including being fortunate to be alongside my beautiful French-Canadian wife-partner Marie Dion, now “tigether” [sic] more than 2 decades and still we are both very much in the prime of life.

I strongly recommend reading the very “intrresting” [sic] read Diamond Invention book before reading my uncle Dave’s very revealing 2006 memoirs THE UNLIKELY FORESTER.

It is of course much more than my smarts that has kept me free and alive as well as close to producing the final draft of my forthcoming book D-Money Lie which has the potential to end all wars, all poverty should someone like Netanyahu make the right speech before the US  Congress.

I could go on but I dont like typing on a small device and besides it is time to take our world traveler dog for a walk here in beautiful Ronda Spain.

i have heard of mr epstein’s book and heard about some of its contents but
have not read it yet…

i bet your uncle has some stories to tell.
mr charles engelhard was an interesting fellow
